Smith Structural Staff Bios

Jeffrey L. Smith, P.E.

Mr. Jeffrey L. Smith, P.E., is the sole proprietor and founder of the firm and has over 23 years of design experience. He graduated from high school in George West, Texas in 1974 and from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 with Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. From 1981 to 1983 Mr. Smith worked for Tao Associates Architects, from 1983 to 1990 for Jose I. Guerra, Inc., structural engineers and has been self employed from 1990 to the present. The first 2 years of his experience were in architectural design and the remainder has been in structural design. His experience is varied and includes residential, institutional, religious, commercial, educational, governmental and environmental projects. A sample of projects Mr. Smith had a major structural design role in while employed with Jose I. Guerra, Inc. are as follows:

1. Texas Commerce Bank Northcross - Austin, Texas
2. McGregor High School -  McGregor, Texas
3. KLBJ Radio Station – Austin, Texas
4. Lago Vista High School Additions – Lago Vista, Texas
5. Central Utilities Building, Sematech – Austin, Texas
6. Motorola MOS 11 Wafer Fab Building, Austin, Texas
7. Bridge Inventory, Inspection, and Appraisal Program – Inspected approximately 350 bridges for the Texas Department of Transportation

Mr. Smith is currently an active member of the Austin Chapter of the Structural Engineers Association of Texas. In the past he has served as the treasurer and secretary for the Austin Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. For 8 years he was a volunteer instructor for the Austin Women in Architecture’s Study Course for the Architectural Licensing Examination and for 3 years he served in the same capacity for the San Antonio Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.  He is also a certified Windstorm Inspector for the Texas State Board of Insurance.
